The City of Sonoma, in partnership with the Sonoma Overlook Trail Stewards and American Conservation Experience, will be making improvements to the Upper Sonoma Overlook Trail this spring. To complete necessary repairs and rebuild the rocky trail bed, the Upper Overlook Trail will be closed from March 5 through May 21, 2025.

What’s Open?

The Lower Overlook Trail will remain open throughout the project, along with all access points:

  • Main Trailhead: 1st St. W. near the Mountain Cemetery gate (onsite and nearby parking available)
  • Norrbom Road Access: East side of Norrbom Road beside the water tower (no parking available)
  • Toyon Trailhead: Located in Mountain Cemetery (no parking available)

Visitors can enjoy a 30-minute loop on the Lower Trail by starting at the main trailhead, following signage to the Toyon Trailhead, and returning through Mountain Cemetery. View a trail map.

Looking for an Alternative Hike?

For those looking for stunning views and a great workout, Montini Preserve—adjacent to Overlook—offers a fantastic alternative during the closure. Check out the Holstein and Valley of the Moon segments for some of the best sights!

Montini Preserve Trail Access:

  • Main Trailhead: Top end of 4th St. W. (parking available)
  • 1st St. W. Entrance: Just north of the baseball and soccer fields (parking available)

Hikes at Montini vary from 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the chosen loop. Trail maps are posted at main trailheads for both Montini and Overlook.

Other Nearby Walking Options

The Sonoma Bike Path offers a flat, easy walk and runs across the north side of Sonoma, following the path of an old railway line. The 12-block route passes through open fields, historic sites, vineyards, sports fields, and residential neighborhoods.

About the Trail Work

Crews from the American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit organization that trains young adults in trail-building, restoration, and land management careers, will be completing the repairs.

Thank you for your patience as we work to improve the Upper Overlook Trail for all to enjoy!
