Residents of the City of Sonoma may notice smoke on Wednesday, October 23, due to a planned prescribed burn at Tolay Lake Regional Park, approximately 10 miles southwest of Sonoma Plaza. Sonoma County Regional Parks is conducting this controlled burn in partnership with the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria (FIGR) and CAL FIRE. Fire crews will burn about 120 acres of grassland, starting at 9 a.m. and continuing throughout the day.
While the smoke may be visible for several hours, this is a permitted and controlled burn. There is no need to call 911 for this activity. Prescribed burns like this are carefully managed to reduce the risk of future wildfires, promote biodiversity, and support ecological restoration.
The Watch Duty app is a helpful resource if you’re concerned about visible smoke or want more information. While it doesn’t push notifications for prescribed burns, you can check the app to monitor their locations and get additional details on fire activity.
Thank you for your awareness and cooperation as these important fire safety measures are carried out. For more information about this prescribed burn, visit the Sonoma County Regional Parks website.
