An updated draft Fire Hazard Severity Map is now available for public review and comment. This map is based on CalFire’s updated Fire Hazard Severity Zones, which determine fire hazard classifications for the City of Sonoma, Sonoma Valley, and surrounding areas based on climate data, fire history, and wildfire modeling.
View the Interactive Map & Submit Comments by April 13th on the City’s Local Responsibility Area Fire Hazard Severity Map webpage.
About the Map & What It Means
The City of Sonoma cannot downgrade hazard classifications set by CalFire, but local jurisdictions may recommend upgrading severity if justified by wildfire history or environmental conditions.
These maps do not predict fire occurrence but help guide:
- Home hardening & defensible space requirements
- Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) building codes for new construction & major renovations
- Fire hazard disclosures in real estate transactions
Public Hearing Coming Soon
The Sonoma City Council will hold a public hearing (date TBD) to review the map and public feedback before adopting the final designations. Stay tuned for updates.
