FAIR MAPS Act Assessment
This document evaluates 16 district maps submitted by the public by February 26, 2025, for the City of Sonoma’s transition to district-based elections, in line with the FAIR MAPS Act. This California law ensures fair districting based on the following criteria:
- Population Equality: Balanced populations within a 10% deviation.
- Contiguity: Districts must be connected.
- Communities of Interest: Preserving neighborhoods with shared interests.
- Identifiable Boundaries: Clear, recognizable district lines.
- Compactness: Logical district shapes.
Of the 16 maps submitted (7 four-district and 9 five-district), each was assessed for compliance. The City Council can advance any compliant map for consideration and work with demographers to adjust promising maps that fall short of criteria. Submitted maps can be found on the Transition to District Based Elections Draft Maps & Public Submissions page.
