About the Master Tree List
This curated selection of trees has been identified by the UC Master Gardener Program of Sonoma County as those most likely to survive and thrive in the climate projected for our region between 2050 and 2100. The list is based on a science-driven model using eight selection criteria, including drought and temperature tolerance, pest and damage resistance, habitat value, and maintenance needs.

The City of Sonoma’s updated Master Tree List was developed through a collaborative effort led by the Parks, Recreation, and Open Space (PROS) Commission. After reviewing outdated inventory lists and conducting extensive research, an ad hoc committee—made up of PROS Commissioners and City staff—finalized the new tree list with input from the City Arborist. The list was unanimously recommended for adoption by the PROS Commission on December 11, 2024, and officially adopted by the Sonoma City Council on March 19, 2025.

The list is intended to guide residents in selecting appropriate replacement trees following approved removals. While use of the list is not required, it is strongly encouraged to promote a healthy, climate-resilient urban forest for the future.

More information, including the full list of selection criteria and additional resources, is available on the UC Master Gardeners Website.
