February 28, 2025 – Sonoma, CA – The City of Sonoma will officially dedicate the Larry Murphy Bridge in honor of the late Larry Murphy during a special ceremony on Friday, March 14, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 Noon. The event will take place on France Street, between Broadway and Austin Street, near the longtime home of Larry and Rose Murphy.
The dedication ceremony will feature a brief program, remarks from City officials, and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque.
Larry Murphy, who passed away in 2024, was a respected and widely regarded member of the Sonoma community. He served on the Sonoma City Council from 1984 to 1992, including two terms as mayor in 1988 and 1992. He was also the co-founder of Murphy’s Irish Pub, a cherished gathering place that continues to reflect his warm and welcoming spirit.
At their September 18, 2024, meeting, the Sonoma City Council approved Resolution 77-2024, formally dedicating the France Street Bridge to former mayor Larry Murphy. In the same meeting, the council also adopted a city property and infrastructure naming policy, providing a clear process for honoring individuals who have made a meaningful impact on the community. More information about the policy can be found at www.sonomacity.org/naming-and-dedication-of-city-property.
Mayor Patricia Farrar Rivas reflected on Murphy’s contributions, stating: “Larry Murphy embodied the heart and soul of Sonoma. His dedication, leadership, and generosity left a lasting impact on our city. This bridge dedication is a fitting tribute, symbolizing the connections he built among friends, family, and neighbors throughout his life.”
The City of Sonoma extends its sincere appreciation to Martin Laney of Sonoma, who graciously donated the commemorative plaque for this dedication.
The community is invited to attend this special event and celebrate Larry Murphy’s legacy. To minimize disruptions to neighbors, attendees are encouraged to walk to the event if possible. More details about the dedication can be found at www.sonomacity.org/event/larry-murphy-bridge-dedication.
