City of Sonoma Opens Application Period for Youth Commissioner Positions

The City of Sonoma is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for Youth Commissioner positions on its City commissions and committees. This is an exceptional opportunity for local youth to participate in the governance of their community, contribute fresh perspectives, and gain valuable experience in public service.

Available Youth Positions:

  • Cultural & Fine Arts Commission (CFAC)
    The CFAC is dedicated to developing and establishing a balanced arts and cultural program for the City. Each year, the commission selects and honors the “Treasure Artist of the Year” and sponsors the “Student Creative Arts Awards,” which provide cash awards to deserving young artists.
  • Design Review & Historic Preservation Commission (DRHPC)
    The DRHPC is responsible for protecting Sonoma’s architectural heritage and promoting excellence in town design through the review of proposed projects and developments.
  • Parks, Recreation & Open Space Commission (PROS)
    The PROS Commission advises the City Council on matters related to the preservation and enhancement of parks, recreational facilities, and open spaces within the City.
  • Planning Commission
    The Planning Commission’s duties include developing the General Plan and Development Code, reviewing environmental impact reports, and overseeing subdivision and parcel maps, as well as use permit and variance applications.
  • Traffic Safety Committee
    The Traffic Safety Committee reviews and provides recommendations on traffic safety issues submitted by residents, advising the City Council on potential solutions.

Eligibility and Application Details:
Youth members must be between 14 and 18 years of age at the time of appointment and reside within the City of Sonoma or the greater Sonoma Valley. The term of service is two years, beginning on October 1, 2024, or immediately upon appointment.

Interested individuals, including current members seeking reappointment, are encouraged to apply by submitting an application no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 20, 2024.
