Sonoma, CA – January 25, 2025 – The City of Sonoma proudly announces Kathy Witkowicki as the 2025 Honorary Alcaldessa, recognizing her remarkable commitment to community service and her transformative contributions to Sonoma Valley. Her selection as Alcaldessa follows a thoughtful process, informed by heartfelt community nominations and recommendations, announced during the City Council Meeting on January 17th by Mayor Patricia Farrar-Rivas.
The Honorary Alcalde tradition, rooted in California’s pueblo system, recognizes exceptional community service and leadership. Historically, the Alcalde served as a respected leader and decision-maker in local governance. Revived by the City of Sonoma in 1975, the title now honors individuals who exemplify dedication to the welfare of Sonoma Valley, celebrating their contributions and inspiring others to make a difference
Reflecting on the significance of the Honorary Alcalde tradition, Mayor Farrar-Rivas said, “Kathy Witkowicki’s legacy of service exemplifies the best of Sonoma Valley. Her work has touched countless lives, and her unwavering dedication inspires us all to do more for our community.”
Kathy Witkowicki’s extensive contributions to the Sonoma Valley include founding the Sonoma Valley Mentoring Alliance in 1996, a program that has provided mentorship opportunities for over 2,300 students. Even after stepping down as executive director, Kathy has remained a vital part of the program, serving on the board and continuing to mentor students.
In addition to her work with the Mentoring Alliance, Kathy launched the Sonoma Speaker Series, bringing renowned authors, public figures, and thought leaders to engage and educate the community. She also serves as a trustee for Speedway Children’s Charities, contributing to the distribution of over $6 million to youth-focused non-profits in Sonoma County.
As one nomination letter stated, “Kathy has a unique ability to connect people and build bridges between communities, leaving a lasting impact wherever she serves.” Another noted, “Her vision, leadership, and heart have made Sonoma Valley a better place for all.”
To honor Kathy’s achievements, the City of Sonoma will host a reception on March 20, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. at The Vintage House, 264 1st St E, Sonoma, CA 95476.
