Project Description

Location: Broadway between Napa Street and Maple Street

The Broadway Streetscape Improvement Project is part of the City of Sonoma’s ongoing efforts to enhance safety, preserve infrastructure, and support local businesses along one of the City’s most iconic corridors. Broadway serves as the main roadway leading to the historic Sonoma Plaza and is home to numerous businesses and community destinations.

Over the years, tree roots along Broadway have caused sidewalk displacements, posing safety risks. Additionally, some tree limbs have become hazardous, touching or encroaching on nearby buildings, raising safety concerns and obstructing visibility.

To address these concerns, the City is implementing a phased approach:

  • Phase 1 addresses critical safety issues, including repairing sidewalk displacements and removing hazardous tree limbs.
  • Phase 2 will involve a potential comprehensive plan for sidewalks, street trees, and overall frontage improvements, which will be developed in the coming years.

This project aims to ensure Broadway remains a safe and welcoming space for residents, businesses, and visitors.

Current Status

The City has completed the following Phase 1 tasks:

  • Sidewalk Displacement Repairs:
    • Small displacements were smoothed and filled to eliminate tripping hazards.
    • Large displacements were repaired with new concrete, ensuring a safe and level walking surface.

Work in progress:

  • Tree Branch Maintenance:
    • Crews will address hazardous limbs in early December, removing encroaching branches, and dead wood, and creating necessary clearance for large vehicles.
