Sonoma Named First Cittaslow City in the U.S
Cittaslow was inspired in Europe by the Slow Food movement and encompasses maintenance of a high quality of life, localism, sustainability and preservation of cultural heritage. Thank you to resident Virginia Hubbell for spearheading this effort! It is an honor for Sonoma to be named among the world's highest quality of life communities. Read the press release from Cittaslow Sonoma Valley.
City Wins Bicycle Friendly Community Award
In November 2009, the City of Sonoma was awarded the League of American Bicyclists Bicycle Friendly Community Award, at the Bronze level of recognition, for its demonstrated commitment to making improvements to the City toward bicycle riding and ease of non-auto travel. Read the press release announcing the award, the City's adopted Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan and the League of American Bicyclists page on the City of Sonoma. A hike and bike map of Sonoma is downloadable from the Sonoma Valley Visitors Bureau website.
Citizen Emergency Preparedness
The Sonoma Disaster Council was created by the City Council to help the community be more proactive in terms of emergency preparedness. The Disaster Council recently completed a citizen's guide to disaster preparedness aimed at fostering neighborhood-based groups that can work together to help meet the challanges posed by disasters such as earthquakes, fires and floods. You can download the handbook here.
Energy and Water Efficiency Loan Program
The City Council, at its meeting of April 1st, became the first city in Sonoma County to enable city businesses and city residents to access the newly established Sonoma County Energy Independence Loan Program. Property owners will be able to borrow money to install a wide variety of improvements, including but not limited to solar and voltaic units, solar thermal devices and tankless water heaters. Also eligible are water efficiency technologies that help conserve water, such as low-flush toilets. Applications to the program and detailed information is available on the newly-established website at www.sonomacountyenergy.org.
On-line Suggestion Box - New Feature
On the list of links to the left, we have added a new capability to the City's website - a suggestion box! This feature is another step in making the City web site more interactive and making your City government more responsive. It is intended to encourage members of our community to submit ideas regarding any area of City operations. So check it out and give us your ideas on making Sonoma an even better place to live, work, play, and grow.
